Hemidrachm of Achaia, Patrai

Silver hemidrachm, 17mm, 2.66gm, issued c. 31 BC

Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right.

Rev: AΓVC AICXPIꞶNOC, Inscription is three lines around Patrai monogram and within wreath decorated with prows of ships.

References: HGC 58.

Rare.

The prows on the wreath allude to Agrippa's victory at Patrai (a base for Antony and Cleopatra) shortly after the blockade at Actium (Dio 50.13.5). Haug suggests this coin was issued soon after the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, possibly to pay the troops (E. Haug, 'Local Politics: Antony and Cleopatra at Patras', AJN 2008, p. 416).
