Initially Macedon was a dependency of the Persian Empire and Alexander was an ally of Xerxes during his invasion of Greece during the Persian Wars. Alexander was sympathetic to the Greek cause however, and after the Persian defeat at the battle of Plataea, Alexander attacked and routed the retreating Persian forces while they were marching through Macedon.
