Maximinus II

Augustus (309AD-311AD)

Maximinus Daia was the sister-son of Galerius, and appointed as his uncle's Caesar when Galerius succeeded Diocletian in 305 AD. When Constantine and Maxentius demanded Caesarships as well, after Constantius' death, and after Severus' death Licinius was appointed in his place, Maximinus felt jilted. Licinius had been promoted to Augustus without having been a Caesar, and Constantine was given in an unlawful Caesarship. Maximinus demanded he too, should become an Augustus and in 309 AD Galerius gave in. On Galerius' death, Maximinus hurriedly claimed most of his uncle's territory and even his uncle's wife, Galeria Valeria, who was Diocletian's daughter. Licinius and Constantine came to agreement, giving Licinius the support he needed to turn his attention on Maximinus. In 313 AD they clashed, and Maximinus was defeated. He fled, but quickly became ill and died at Tarsus.
